It's worth considering a web-based FTP/SFTP client like Monsta FTP, which you simply install on your website and then access from your browser to manage your files. It's free to download from https://www.monstaftp.com (disclaimer: I'm involved with this project)

Looks like a good program thanks for the suggestion. I haven't noticed any system performance lag from Pure Text, and like Get Plain Text, it does not have to start with Windows there's an option for it to start with Windows, or not. You can put the icon anywhere you like, Desktop, Toolbar, Quick Launch or anywhere else. I like it that Pure Text is in active development with new versions released to run with new Windows releases and that it will run on Windows XP forward so anyone running older versions of Windows can use it. :)

Which program are you referring to? If it's Google Image Search, there's a direct link in my comment under this article. If it's Pure Text, the link is direct link to the download page, scroll down a bit, links to the 32 and 64 bit versions are partway down the page.

I have used a small freeware program similar to PureText for many years called Get Plain Text (http://clipdiary.com/getplaintext/). Rather than being resident in memory it simply runs when clicked to clear formatting from the clipboard. I keep it in the quick-launch area on the left of my task bar and click it after I've copied text to the clipboard.

Add This $15.99 Computer Book To Your Collection For Free 1 day 11 hours ago classicggma65

Got to jump through a few hoops to get this...Have to fill out the form with your business info in it and All fields Must be filled in. Since I sign petitions, I'm used to fudging info so I don't get unwanted calls or mail from nonprofits. I used one of my alias email addresses-yes, it's working and current. Then, my address doesn't contain the north, south, etc direction or apt number when filled in. The zipcode of 99999 was accepted. I did have to put a valid phone number...hate having to do that as I have an unpublished number so used a very old number...yes, know it's not cool.

After filling in my "job" info, I was told to verify my email address then I could download the book. Had to sign in with my email to access "my library" but the book did download to my computer. This is more than I would ever do to get a free book...and not something worth the time having to put in so much personal info. Hopefully it will be worth it...looking forward to explanations that aren't so technical. Thanx...but won't do this again...

At GitHub (https://github.com/apsun/GoogleImageShell), look above the green line - there are various links there such as commits, branch, releases, contributor, etc.
Click on releases, and the latest version will be at the top, (currently v1.2). The downloads for the .exe files and source codes are found there. The file you want is GoogleImageShell.exe.
Here's a direct link to the releases page:
https://github.com/apsun/GoogleImageShell/releases

Hope that helps. :)

In my case it tried to get me to download Avast, but it's a pretty straightforward matter to just uncheck the relevant box and decline.

Thanks Philip - I appreciate your efforts across Gizmo.
I consider Boxcryptor 1.x and 2.x different products. 1.x is industry standard & 2.x is not. They are incompatible.
For that reason, even though Boxcryptor 1 is unsupported, it is my preferred product. It continues to run well in Windows 10 & I've confirmed I can access the files via other EncFS products. (Windows EncFSMP is simple but works BTW)
As an aside, I note my installed version is 1.7.409.131 and the portable version is 1.6.402.92.

HIBP Approaching 4 Billion Hacked Accounts. Including Yours? 1 week 2 days ago Harry Harddrive

This is a re-post of previous posts. And, again, I shall say this to HIBP: although it is okay to get people aware, in the end there is no freakin' point in knowing JUST whether your email ended up in some breach. I myself am using long passwords - randomly generated.

So then I hear I have been powned?
Okay... so tell me: which site precisely?

In many cases the site won't tell you. Even worse, it also puts out "breaches" that have not yet been confirmed and/or may just be replicates of previous breaches. So you'd like me to change ALL of my 500+ fucking passwords, that were generated randomly in the first place. Oh please, come on - that's just bullocks! I still have a real life, you know.

The only sensible way that this HIBP info could be used, is that HIBP to be offering additional info on these "undisclosed" breaches.
If not - it's just useless.

I was so glad when I found Dr. Web Antivirus Light. I didn't want remote wipe/lock or any of that - just the anti-malware. I have been using this for over a year now and, along with common sense, haven't had any issues. Additionally, on a 3.5 year old phone with 2GB Ram, there was no slowdown, and per GSam Battery monitor, it uses less than almost any other app, barely 0.1% of battery life. If you just want a solid real-time and on-demand scanner, it's really one of the only options but thankfully it's a good one too

Hi, I'm in the Philippines. I am waiting for my Windows 10 Creator's Update. I read this article yesterday and this morning when I opened my laptop, there was a notification saying that I should give permission to enable some features so when my Creator's Update is ready, it will install faster. One of the features was sending data to Microsoft to better UI. After I agreed to its Uac, yes. It prompted me twice but the UAC had this UPUXWORKER as it's origin of uac. Is that malware? This is the first time that I have seen this UPUXWORKER in the uac since I first encountered the uac in Vista in 2008. Is this from Microsoft Philippines? Has anyone seen this UPUXWORKER once they have clicked yes to the uac giving permission to Microsoft for the Creator's Update? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

It will also annoy you with constant ads on the free version. Some users say it is heavy on resources as well I decided not to install. I mainly wanted to get rid of icon descriptions so I tried EVIE launcher. No permissions required for install. Works great and in "Settings" you can enable what "Read Badges" you want enabled like for your message icon or phone icon. It has widgets you can enable and icon grid adjustments It doesn't use a lot of resources either.

Song Director also is constantly being upgraded with new features and accepts suggestions on how to make it better. The customer service via email is extremely fast. Agree on all points made by wildweasel, including Web of Trust which I don't bother looking at anymore. It *may* be okay for tech stuff, but gets wildly skewed by trolls on topics where people have strong opinions, e.g. politics, spiritual paths etc. I appreciate the efforts put forth by those reviewing new freeware, but don't want to waste time testing every new program that comes to someone's attention when what I'm already using, e.g. TeamViewer in this case, is as good or better.
I'd suggest including a clear reason[s] in these recommendations why someone might want to switch software.

Using Windows 7 And Linux On The Same Computer 3 weeks 1 day ago br1anstorm

I'd just like to add my support, or reinforcement, to the recommendation about EasyBCD.

In making the transition from Windows to Linux, I wasn't keen to abandon Windows 7 completely as I have a few Windows-only programs which I continue to use. So dual boot was the obvious route to follow. But I wasn't happy about the idea of having to ditch the Windows bootloader (MBR) and replace it with Linux's GRUB - mainly because the reinstatement of a Windows-only setup, and the reinstallation of Windows MBR, looked like a challenge and a headache.

EasyBCD is the solution. With EasyBCD installed in Windows 7, the Windows MBR is retained, and provided you take care when partitioning and installing the Linux (GRUB) bootloader(s) it's possible to have not only dual but multiple-boot OSs without losing, rewriting or deleting the original Windows MBR.

On my (modest) laptop I have Windows 7, Linux Mint, Linux Lite and PCLinuxOS. The choice at boot-up is simple and clear. In terms of work, saving files on a shared 'data' partition means that any of the three Linux OSs can access them; and saving files on an external USB HDD enables Win7 to see them too.

I have no plans to revert to a Win7-only setup. But I like the fact that if I did want to do so, it would be a simple and pain-free step.

Windows 7 Startup 3 weeks 2 days ago Remah

That scenario is extremely unlikely particularly when there are many far more likely reasons for slow startup. Bugs during startup are a common cause: a bug in an update particularly if it affects system restore point; a bug in a device driver; a bug in a service; etc. Many problems cause time-outs which mean that you're system can be sitting around waiting for a response until a threshold is passed and the system records an error/warning.

The first thing to do is to find out what the actual boot time is, then compare it with earlier boot times and see where the slow down occurs.

The article How to Use Event Viewer to Find Your PC’s Boot Time is for Windows 7 but it works almost exactly the same for Windows 8 and 10. Just note that when you double-click an event to view its properties then you can select the Details tab to see many of the startup times discussed in this article.

P.S. Now that this article has been split, I have space to extend the article with some details about this sort of issue.

Further Vital Updates For Windows XP and 8.0 3 weeks 2 days ago jms319

Hello,

If you have problems finding these updates for "Older Platforms" as XP, maybe you can use the following easy method to download the security updates without googling with the risk visiting (probably) "bad" sites: These updates are from Microsoft's own servers (Microsoft Update Catalog):

You can read more about the new security updates in the article here:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4025687/microsoft-security-advisory-4025685-guidance-for-older-platforms

See which updates you need to download for your system, for example for XP 32-bit with Service Pack 3:

Look under "Older platforms table 2 of 3"

Find the row "Windows XP Service Pack 3"

You see in this row the KB numbers of 5 available updates, for example, under CVE-2017-0176 you see for example 4022747 (=KB4022747).

To download this KB, head to:

http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=4022747

As an example, KB4022747 is the default query) Search for 4022747 (or KB4022747) or another KB you need to download. You can choose for which system language you want to download the file. Download the right one, since another language won't install probably. You'll find the SHA-1 checksums into the filename!

KB4012598 was the first security update for "Older systems" like XP, issued somewhere in May 2017, so beside the updates in Robs article (above), you should also download and install kb4012598 if you are still using an older version of Windows that doesn't update automatically - and didn't install that KB yet.

And even easier to find the latest updates: type "Security update for Windows XP" into the search box and sort on "Last Updated" to find all recent security updates.

Hey Rob,

Any feedback on AeroAdmin?

http://www.aeroadmin.com/en/

I've been using it for a while now & works well-- also, free for business! No installation required-- the other party downloads the exe & accepts the remote, that's all there is to it (very similar to Teamviewer).

Cheers

"...I'm not going to download and install a program just based on that."

From the article:

"It's also portable so will work straight away without needing to be installed."

Are you REALLY going to think WOT is reliable for programs like this?

To be honest, that is mad.

I'm always going to give you a five just for the time you spent researching and writing the article, but I sometimes wonder where you find these, so called jewels/gems? I put no Trust in "Web of Trust" and I could find very little information about this offering. And the little I did find gave me no confidence in it. I do trust "VirusTotal", for that most part, but I'm not going to download and install a program just based on that.

Thanks for the heads up; I'll stick with "Team Viewer".

POP Peeper, available at www.esumsoft (dot) com, is THE email aggregator. It works *perfectly* not only with unlimited GMail accounts but with every other POP or IMAP server out there; including Yahoo, Outlook.com, Hotmail and private domain servers.

Its feature-rich interface is well thought out and efficient and the program is constantly being developed by a very responsive and accessible.

I've used it for approximately 7 years and it is still one of the first installations on all my computers, despite my having looked at other "pretenders" since, including the disappointing, overly cutesy and obnoxious Mailbird.

POP Peeper, folks. Plain and simple.

No, it is WAY more than just a "notifier". Please, take the time to look more carefully and you will never again need to visit a web page to access your webmail (or any other email) accounts. I use it for approximately 25+ GMail, Outlook, Yahoo (and an even the old .MSN) email accounts, as well as all my own, private-domain accounts and even the RSS feeds I subscribe to, including GIZMO's. :)

At the risk of sounding like a cheesy TV commercial for a product to which I have no relationship other than as a very satisfied user, I say: "Give it a thorough look/see and you will not regret it".

Hi,
This sounds nice but when I went to the site, it says the SW is just an email notifier? I thought it was able to replace looking at each separate mail product? It seems to notify me of new mail across products but thats it ?
Thanks!

I have been using this program for 2 days with one gmail account. I already have been notified that I will need to buy the program after this week if I intend to to continue using it. That's not fair. Bummer! And after I set it up just the way I like too.

That's fine if you only have a Gmail account : I have a personal non-Gmail account but also a Gmail account for a community group with which I'm involved. Therefore, for me, it has to be Thunderbird.

Although it has been stated that developnent of Thunderbird is not continued, updates are still being issued - the last only a couple of weeks (?) ago.

I use Mailbird, for all my email accounts, and I am pleased with it.
