Hitman Pro found a trojan in CCleaner when I scanned my computer recently, I hadn't known anything about the situation you are reporting here and was skeptical that it was false positive. I removed CCleaner anyway by using Hitman Pro and it said it removed the threat. I guess I was right to remove it in spite of my doubts.

There is a lot more detail at this link http://blog.talosintelligence.com/2017/09/avast-distributes-malware.html . It's heavy reading, but the bottom line is that (a) it was the 32-bit 5.33 version of CCleaner that was infected, which was distributed in August and part of September, (b) uninstalling or updating CCleaner doesn't remove the infection from your PC, however (c) it appears that the worst effects of the malware have been neutralized even if you do have the infection. If you feel comfortable poking around in your registry, you can see if your PC was affected.

Best Free Media Player 21 hours 33 min ago nemonemo

On the two front-runners, VLC and PotPlayer. I certainly agree they are the best, by a wide margin. Sadly, on pure image quality, there is no clear winner though, if you're the kind of person who endlessly tweaks his/her tv for the perfect picture that is.
PotPlayer has the cleaner image- less visual hash, but VLC is sharper, and its highlights retain more detail, aren't blown out. Don't take my word for it: take screenshots from both players and zoom in.
But of course for convenience, it's PotPlayer by a mile. If PP's sharpness is good enough, don't even look at VLC, because it's a nightmare of nerdiness, a real clunker, as gimpy as Gimp. The idiots [sorry, it's accurate!] spent all their time coding elaborate esoteric, utterly useless features [want to add waving animation effects? hook it up to room lights!? add motion blur effects? -VLC is your player!].
One wishes PotPlayer coders would add a stronger sharpness filter, and put it in their control panel pop-up, but if they haven't by now, they never will [I wrote them long ago, and got the standard NIH response (Not Invented Here)]. By the way, WarpSharp is ****, and VLC's debanding filter, film grain filter, and HiQ denoise filter are all totally bogus too*. (Really- A:B screenshots showed zero effects! Coders are strange people.)
To summarize, if your source material is fairly sharp and/or you're not fussy about that last inch of quality, stick with PotPlayer. But if sharpness (and highlight detail) turn your crank, settle for VLC.
*VLC's jump forward/back (>, < arrows) are broken. You'll have to d/l a copy of Torrent Video Player to get that feature working. A kast word on VLC- despite announced updates, and d/l sites that show newer versions, it hasn't changed in many years- the image quality is absolutely identical, and the interface too.

I agree with you trainman261, exactly my thoughts :). Although yes, the ads now on Mx Player can be a bit annoying, but it still is a very solid good quality player. I can deal with the ads, as long as they don't turn too intrusive.

view
Best Free Media Player for Android 5 days 23 hours ago trainman261

I honestly have to say that I didn't find the ads too annoying. I mean yes, there are ads there, but it's not anything intrusive - I draw the line where an ad blocks me from doing something, and that has never happened to me (I use MX as my daily driver). On the other hand, just about everything else is just about perfect - something I can't really say about VLC - I had too many problems with it to recommend it. The comparison with VLC is that the same way one could say that VLC is the de-facto video player for many people on PC, I would recommend MX as the de-facto video player for Android - in my opinion, it's the most solid media player around. If you don't want any ads, this isn't the app for you, but otherwise, I definitely recommend it.

Using Thunderbird For Email? There Are Add-Ins And They're Great. 1 week 1 day ago eikelein

I have no professional, semi-professional, contractual or financial connection with the Mozilla organisation or anybody involved in Thunderbird's maintenance.

Please send the screen shot as an attachment to ejhprivate@gmail.com. Recently I created this account for personal reasons with the express purpose of being able to "throw away" this account at any time. I will begin tomorrow to check daily for an email from you.

Hi eiklein, thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I will try to add a screenshot of the percent figure showing how much of the Thunderbird folder is used. I searched the internet and most replies say Thunderbird can't be increased. So that confused me. On the settings I have, it is imap. That's all I know because I'm not very good at these things. OK, I'll have to forget the screenshot, I don't know how or if it can be added here. Anyway, it shows 81% full. And I understand we can't post links in Comments. One site says this "How to Increase Your Mailbox Limit in Thunderbird" and that's what I've tried to do.
Thank you.

Online Bible is really far better than E-sword. At the very least, it deserves a mention in your list. Online Bible isn't the best name, I know, since it's a downloaded program, but it predates a time when "online" didn't necessarily mean on the internet (1995). It's updated regularly and available free at onlinebible.net and most of the modules and study tools are free as well.

It's so much better than most other programs because you can scroll through the entire Bible (no three-click-process to change books); you can search and have all the verses *displayed with the text*, rather than a click-each-reference-to-see-what-it-said, allowing you to search very fast to find what you want; It has a simple and clean interface, and runs on a memory stick.

Just because MS decided to make Edge the default viewer, is no reason to live with their default.
Also I am an old man, but there is an 'old woman' inside me that is uncomfortable about doing certain things.
One of those things, is viewing PDF's in browsers.
Why not make pdf-xchange-viewer your default viewer
https://www.tracker-software.com/product/pdf-xchange-viewer
Rob
PS Over the years, every time I went to their site, it was an unsettling challenge, to be sure that I was downloading the free viewer.
Over the last year'ish, it got even harder, as they are pushing a more recent version on to us (with Editor in the name I think).
It is also free, but is not as simple/good as the xchange viewer, and is irritating as there are some pro'ish features lurking around which are trial'ish.
AGH!
Someone may care to double check that the link I gave above is really to the older/simple/nicer/free'er version ?

Anyone having trouble downloading this ?
I have been with TradePub for years, so that is not the problem.
They did the usual thing - sent me an email with a link to download via their web site
But it cannot carry out the action (not from the want of trying)
The page isn’t redirecting properly
Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete

UPDATE
I tried different browsers, and anything else I could think of.
Went around in circles a few times.
Tried accessing it from 'My Library', and went around a couple of circles on that.
Finally managed to download from 'My Library'
If anyone works out how I managed that, let me know.

It's free because it's really a promotional tool for the company's *paid-for offline version*, but the online version is still very useful."

In other words, the desktop app costs money. The browser version is free. Just select the text that is already there in the browser, press delete, and start writing...

Finds of the Week: Does Windows 10 Spy on You? / Unblock Flash in Browsers / Send Large Files Online for Free / What PC Files to Back Up 1 week 6 days ago jmaloney

Yesterday I had to solve the flash problem after I updated to Firefox 55.0.3 on 64-bit Windows 7. I keep flash set to "Ask to Activate". When I went to a tennis site to watch a US Open match, no flash window appeared and there was no pop-up asking to allow flash. It looked like the Firefox update had broken flash.

On the Firefox plugin roadmap I found this: "Starting with Firefox 55 in August 2017, users must choose which sites are allowed to activate the Flash plugin. Users will have the choice to remember the Flash setting per-site. This change will be rolled out progressively during August and September 2017." On my own Firefox I saw no way to tell Firefox to allow flash on my tennis site.

I solved the problem by setting flash to Always Activate. That was the only way I could get Firefox to let me watch the tennis match. Ironically, the Firefox change to increase security resulted in me having to set my flash to be less secure and run all the time.

Using Thunderbird For Email? There Are Add-Ins And They're Great. 2 weeks 13 hours ago eikelein

David,
very seriously, what do you mean with "81% full"?

If you have (an) IMAP account(s) then you may run into a storage limit from you ISP.
If you have (a) POP account(s) all your emails are stored locally - unless you leave them on the server - which would negate the so called "advantages" of IMAP!

I have about 17,000 (17 THOUSAND) emails locally stored. That is according to TreeSize over 3.2GB of net emails.

The Thunderbird folder is in total 3.49GB large.

I have all emails since 1998 in there and it works like day 1.5. The decimal here respects that for example searching through 17,000 emails MUST take longer than through maybe only 1,700 emails.

Is your Trash folder empty? Is your Junk folder empty? Have you compacted the folders?

I thought I know Thunderbird a little but your question really baffles me.

I don't know of a Thunderbird specific limitation. Maybe only that Windows limits file sizes on 32-bit systems. But that is Windows' problem, not Thunderbird's.

Looking forward to your reply.

It also allows you to place multiple cursors so you can select or edit in multiple spots at the same time. On top of that, it's configurable and extendible beyond belief. There's a pretty vast repository of plugins which can add support for new languages, color themes, network support, organization, you name it. You can also fine tune how the editor runs and change up all of the keyboard bindings to suit your tastes. If you've ever used Sublime Text, it's a lot like that, but with a much more user friendly interface in terms of features.

The extension warns you if you try to send to multiple recipients as a To or CC. Can prevent a disastrous mistake where a CC was used in error.

@dlibertine:
If you use an add-on for that you are likely over-extending (looks better than "over-extensioning").
Bcc is natively in Thunderbird.

"Use Bcc instead" is one I use it all the time. It permits me to send to a list of unidentified recipients.

So let's start a list. First of all, here are some links to the top rated and most popular extensions and add-ons:

Top Rated
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/extensions/?sort=rating

Most Popular
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/extensions/?sort=users

These are some of the extensions and addons I usually install when setting up Thunderbird for myself or for a client.

1. Lightning - now comes built into Thunderbird. It still requires some technical knowledge to set it up properly

2. Google Calendar Provider - Instead of Lightning some prefer this addon because it shows you the web version of the Google Calendar right inside of Thunderbird and works flawlessly
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/provider-for-google-calendar/

3. Theme font and size changer - this is indispensable when installing Thunderbird for someone who needs larger fonts
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/theme-font-size-changer

4. GContactSync - Try doing this with Outlook! You'll need to spend some money and even then it's not perfect. This extension allows you to sync your Thunderbird contacts with your Gmail contacts, which subsequently sync with your phone, and vice-verse.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/gcontactsync/

5. Send Later - self-explanatory
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/send-later-3

6. Quick Text - this is great for template emails, multiple signatures, quick responses, etc. Here's a link to a great explanatory video:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/quicktext/

7. BiDi Mail UI - RTL Language support
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/bidi-mail-ui

Ok, that's a start - feel free to add-on!

@drkarasheed
And, please, how are you sure that that is Thunderbird's "fault"?
If I look at the never ending flood of updates that MS needs to release to just keep Outlook working I wonder...

I too agree with you that the article has potential & top 20 recommendations would go far to improve it. I use Thunderbird & am aware of the add ons, but was intrigued by the article to investigate what some of the better extension & add ons would be. Then the bottom fell out.

This has the potential to be the beginning of a great article. It can be built upon quite a bit. For starters, Thunderbird comes in dozens on languages. Literally everything about is customizable. It's stable, especially where other programs, like Outlook, aren't. It's worth mentioning that the setup can be difficult when using 3rd party extensions, but when done right you can sync your Gmail address book and Google Calendar right into Thunderbird. It fully supports right-to-left languages and spell checking after installing the appropriate extensions.

What might not be easy for some is migrating form Outlook. Veteran Outlook users tend to very loyal to Outlook, if for no other reason than Outlook is what they've become used to. For the rest of the world that doesn't like the Gmail interface, Thunderbird is so great that even the venerable Eudora has moved over to using Thunderbird's code base.

I think a great addition to the article would be a highlight of the top 20 recommended add-ons / extensions to really make it useful.

I had used this before but when I failed to import all those folders and subfolders in my INBOX in Microsoft outlook I avoided it.

Got An iPad? Try This Instead Of iTunes On Your PC. 3 weeks 1 day ago hubjf

The software "forced" me to update to a newer version. I didn't want to but the soft was "blocked" as long as I did not update.
I was very unsure that the key would still be valid : bingo, it IS NOT.
So I could use the soft for 1 or 2 weeks and now I'm back on a standard free version with the classical limitations.
Digiarty was not obliged to propose us such "free keys", but I've got the feeling that we all have been cheated.

Best Free File Comparison Utility 3 weeks 1 day ago Bramy

A simple and fast file comparer is CDCheck. It's listed in the "Best Free CD Recovery Utility" category. Because of this I feel many people would never discover CDCheck. The beauty of the program is that " CDCheck provides the following features: readability verification, binary compare, CRC file creation (and verification) and file recovery.

I use it sometimes to compare/ verify that the folders/files that I've copied to a backup external drive are bit for bit the same.

This Dedicated Gmail Client Is Fantastic 3 weeks 2 days ago MidnightCowboy Whatever security software you use is of little use unless you understand how it operates. Check the user guide for Kaspersky and that will (should) explain why this was blocked. Alternatively, use one of the free security solutions that are just as effective and do not rely on "reputation scoring" to assess product safety. MC - Site Manager. view
Got An iPad? Try This Instead Of iTunes On Your PC. 3 weeks 2 days ago Rev_Don

Recieved a reply from their so called support team. All it contained was the same activation code I already had. It's obvious they don't even bother to read e-mails addressed to them. Ran into a similar problem with the offer for a free version of their DVD Ripper that wouldn't activate past the trial version. That was also a link from Gizmo's Freeware. Looks like Gizmo needs to do more research before recommending products as they are recommending too many that aren't free or only limited time/functionality trial software.
