Using Windows 7? You MUST Ensure That Updates Are Enabled. 21 min 7 sec ago Australia

Thanks for the reminder Rob
I found an excellent Microsoft article covering everything about this WannaCrypt ransomware, including the potential way it spreads

https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/mmpc/2017/05/12/wannacrypt-ransomware-worm-targets-out-of-date-systems/

"The threat arrives as a dropper Trojan that has the following two components:
A component that attempts to exploit the SMB CVE-2017-0145 vulnerability in other computers
1)The ransomware known as WannaCrypt"
The worm functionality attempts to infect unpatched Windows machines in the local network.
2)At the same time, it also executes massive scanning on Internet IP addresses to find and infect other vulnerable computers"

This second Microsoft article details what to do if you have been infected with WannaCrypt ransomware:

Increase Your Privacy by Turning off the Diagnostics Tracking Service in Windows 7 24 min 25 sec ago Jakeman

This is cool, and I thank you - but what about the other 3 Diagnostic services listed? You can see them on your screenshot as well and that's what mine looks like. Are they needed? Can they also be "safely" disabled? Should I be ok with just doing what you recommend?

Just wanted to know before I do something that causes more trouble than having Microsoft gather whatever they're gathering!

This is why I've loved this site all these years!

Discover What Data Your Web Browser Is Broadcasting About You 3 hours 53 min ago classicggma65

FYI: Did the test on 6 browsers...All had the same info, such as IP addresses and blacklists, except the Epic browser. Epic gave a different Public IP Address and had no Blacklist. What I found to be strange is that the supposedly extra safe CLIQZ browser gave all the same info as Firefox, Opera, Yandex, IE, and Comodo Dragon. All had the same Public and Local IP Addresses (tho IE had No Local Address, the Public was the same as others), the same info on Blacklists, the same location, Internet Provider, etc. Only Epic showed a different address, Internet provider (not my actual), different location. The info wasn't surprising to me...except for CLIQZ. Must tell you that my actual location has never been right on any browser and have purposely left it that way.

Hi Rick, the data should be accurate, but if you see any discrepancies, please email me at hello@tenta.com with details and I'll investigate.

So although other sites may show some of this information, most are not mobile-friendly at all and outdated. We strived to make a responsive customizable web app designed for modern devices. For example, we're using service workers and smart caching so that results load faster.

Another unique test that this web tool offers is advanced DNS results. Your average DNS leak test site may show the IP, location and provider, but our API also delivers a more complete picture of your DNS privacy/security settings such as checking if DNS over TLS is working. Or if DNSSEC is enabled or "Checking Disabled" is true or false.

Thanks Rob. Great program
In this day and age, all simple utilities should be like this
That is - portable, doesn't affect the Registry, and doesnt rely on dependencies such as NET Framework
I was able to select a number of different files from different locations, and change the attributes of all these files
There is also an option to make the selected files 'hidden' or 'read only'

Very helpful program

I use total commander to compare files and folders and synchronize different ones and
the above-mentioned feature is included too,
besides copying file attributes (specifically dates) only,
you can alter a directory's files' dates, mass rename etc.
It also gives the option to compare check-sums for files instead of date and size,
which comes in handy in cases of smaller files,
it can take a lot of time to complete when handling large or many files..

Thanks,
Will check it out.
Could anyone help me with this problem/need (that perhaps could be solved using Date attribute changes).
A friend has a folder with lots of files (Doc, JPG, xls, msg(outlook), etc), and they wish to be able to Filter them by category.
I investigated using the Metadata, but it appears that was reliable for files in XP, but not in more recent Windows versions.
The user will need approx 12 Tags.
They Tag each file, and I provide a Filter to only list the desired Tagged files.
Could I come up with some numeric equivalent for each Tag and modify the date on that file ?
Which Date (Creation, Modified, Accessed) should I use ?
I am guessing that I could play with the Creation Date, and sleep peacefully knowing that the Creation Date would not be messed with, by other processes (at least whilst the file remains in that original folder)

Does that sound like a plan ?

One year to see if the program surpasses any freeware or previously purchased software, and/or is worth the going price when the year long trial is over - assuming I play around with it within a year (no video projects at the moment). I have to agree with Bruce_Fraser. Yes you clearly stated the one year restriction in the article but not in the headline that leads to the article. There are so many time limited "giveaways" to be found. Many people don't want to go through the install process knowing after the time limit they will be left with a limited use program. No matter how good a program is there will be a need to uninstall it in the end.

Im very sceptical about this website
The mere idea of entering my real email addresses to people I dont know, sends chills up my spine
For all freeware and other internet offers, I use a few junk mail accounts

You would have to be very brave to enter one of your real email addresses, that you use for utilities, banking etc
The website itself states in the FAQ:
Quote: "How do I know the site isn't just harvesting searched email addresses? You don't, but it's not".

Hmm

I entered one of my junk email addresses, and the website states:
"Oh no — pwned! Pwned on 10 breached sites and found 4 pastes (subscribe to search sensitive breaches)"

But the website doesnt tell you what the significance of this is
And I can subscribe by providing my email address. To who ?

Im waiting for someone to comment that they have receive something useful from this website.
So far noone knows what "breached site" means for your individual email account

The whole setup seems too much like those free antivirus checks which state "Your computer is infected"
No thanks

Reminder: Check If Your Email Address Has Been Stolen Or Hacked 1 week 1 hour ago Australia

Providing your work/business email addresses to websites like P*wned, or any website other than your work colleagues is asking for trouble

You are much better off staying off the grid
This means creating a spare (dummy) email account, with a fake name and address, specifically for internet use
Use this dummy email address for all free software offers, registration with websites etc.
Hackers target popular websites, and try to get access to these email databases
Also, many websites will use your email address for advertising and marketing

Save your official email accounts for work/business use, and only use these accounts when sending mail to trusted work colleagues, banks or utilities

If you get any emails from a utility or company, always ring them back, dont email them back
The rule is: they can email you, but you never email them back.
This is because hackers can create websites and email addresses that resemble banks, utility companies and businesses.
Its a very old trick, but there is no end of gullible internet users

Avoid opening email attachments unless they are standard documents from known work colleagues.. Even then be very careful

Stay off the grid

West Swan: If ONLY your email and its password are compromised, any and everyone in your address book probably got emails from you touting some "you gotta see this!" website, or, worse than that, the email included an attachment of some sort with a virus included at no extra charge.

Any good friends may have even emailed you to let you know you got hacked. Changing your email account access will stop further crap coming directly from "you."

I've been getting occasional spam emails for over four years from a former coworker who just doesn't care about adding to the Internet's overabundance of crap. Last statistic I saw was something like over 90% of all internet traffic is spam email.

The other, and much more important point, is that if you read the site, they may have more than just your email addy and password. They may have your password hints or other personal details as well. That could make any site you use, including your bank or investment companies, vulnerable to further efforts. Unfortunately, it's really hard to tell just what info the baddies got on you. That's the main complaint about Pwned.

Make sense??

Be well -

-E.

Hello, so what you are saying is if I have been 'pwned' then somebody somewhere has both my email address AND my password is that correct?

If it is just my email address that has somehow gotten out there then why should I change my password? Of course I know regularly changing a password is a good idea anyhow.

Harry   Harddrive,

Its a good point, but I can tell you from personal experience not listening to a warning can cost you.

What I do is use a password manager, in my case lastpass and in my list of sites, I have in my favorites a list of sites that I must protect and there are not that many of them eg banks, a few buying sites like ebay and amazon, facebook, my blog site, etc. Then what I do is when a warning comes which are not that common, those ones I change.  In any case I do advised that you change these high security passwords regularly.

view
Reminder: Check If Your Email Address Has Been Stolen Or Hacked 1 week 1 day ago Harry Harddrive

Yes, I'm subscribed to this service.
And yes, I got warnings about my email address being mentioned in two recent hacks , or better put: databases compiled together from previous hacks...

I'm having a real problem with this:
1) I tells me my email account was part of some hack somewhere/sometime. "Change your password".
2) these two recent hacks were even UNconfirmed !

Yeah - sure! So now what?

Although I am using a password manager nowadays, some VERY old accounts might be compromised. Or maybe not - it might just as well be a very recent account.

There is ab-so-lu-te-ly NO way to figure this out.
In other words: I am being advised to change my passwords on like.... 500+ sites that my email address might me registered on ??

OH - come on! That's just utter bullcrap.
In order for such a service to be "a service indeed" , it is imperative to know what site(s) the pwned address was derived from.

As long as they do not provide this info - it's effectively a 99% useless service: all that I know is that I am vulnerable - somewhere out there in the Universe.

view
Reminder: Check If Your Email Address Has Been Stolen Or Hacked 1 week 1 day ago ehorwitz1

Thanks for the reminder! I just wish I could see the actual credentials that were stolen as I've changed my passwords whenever a service I use gets hacked - if and when I find out about it, that is. I don't use the same password for everything, but I have been known to use some passwords repeatedly on some less or more secure websites. It would be nice to know what info is out there so I can avoid using them yet again.

Lovely. Just lovely. Oh well.

Very timely, Rob. Thanks again!

Thanks David - yes I did pay something for the new version (9.0) in mid-April, which may explain the lack of adware. The paid version has no ad or crap ware attached. Glad to hear (from others) that Syncredible is good. Will switch to that if FFS gets too intrusive (or expensive), but in the meantime, all my filters and time shifts work well in FFS, and my various backup relativities are saved. It is also remarkably fast - I backup around 100 MB per day to OneDrive - takes 0.5 seconds approx. So for the time being I plan to subscribe every six months or so. Jon

Best Free Folder Synchronization Utility 1 week 2 days ago DavidFB

As a followup, I've been using Aomei Backupper for imaging my boot drive. Just discovered their version 4 has added Real-time Sync in the scheduling section. This will allow me to use it for Backup on Save functions as well - this is for key files to be automatically backed up with each new version. It avoids loosing a days work if something goes wrong between daily data backups. It's saved my bacon a couple of times.

Synchredible is a good sync tool too though. Cleaner interface than FFS.

view
Best Free Folder Synchronization Utility 1 week 2 days ago DavidFB

Hi Jon
The free version of FFS now has ads. That requires sending data to ad servers and returning with the ad content. What that data includes, I don't know but there is often an effort to "target" the ads, meaning they share some user data. I have 0 interest in having adware on my computer, especially when I have no way of knowing what is being shared with who. Many examples illustrate that once that door is opened, collected data tends to expand. There is also issues with opening a door for malware if the unknown ad companies are compromised.

If you've supported FFS, perhaps he gave you a code that turns that off?

I understand why developers are doing this. Its become common for free apps on cell phones and is widespread online. Most people have no clue how much of their user data is being collected and shared unknowingly. But I'd rather not invite that onto my desktop. To use an analogy, it's one thing to have someone listen in on a conversation in a restaurant. It's quite another to have it happen in my living room.

Safe Computing in Under an Hour 1 week 2 days ago Australia

Awesome article Midnight Cowboy. Really appreciate the effort you went to, keeping us informed and safe !
Btw, your article starts by describing the risks posed by USB drives, but you dont specify which of your recommendations is the best for stopping USB drive infections. Is it your antivirus recommendations ? What about a specific freeware USB drive protection program ?

The following freeware are also reviewed on TechSupportAlert, and are what I use. I like simple, nonintrusive, and quick/snappy/no lag software
I have Windows 7 64bit

1)Windows 10 Firewall Control (firewall)
2)Key Scrambler (stops people recording what I type)
3)MCShield (we all use USB drives. Unfortunately they can easily get infected from the work computer, uni computer etc. then they infect your computer when you use your USB drive at home). This freeware so far has protected me from the worms and other USB infections. Not sure how good it is, but its unobtrusive, and I like it so far
4)Sandboxie (reviewed on TechSupportAlert. I often install software into the Sandbox, then copy the files to my computer, thus avoiding any registry changes the installation wanted to make. The software is thus 'cleaned', and made portable. Works for most basic utility programs)
5)Restore Point Creator (saves a copy of my Registry everytime I turn on my computer. Any infection, or lagging of my computer, I just reset to an earlier registry)
6)FreeRaser (a very cool eraser program, which when you need it, sits as a large icon. You just set how many wipes you want, and drag files onto the icon to erase. Good for erasing sensitive documents or files)

Im not so sure about Antivirus software. Real time monitoring is the main feature I want, as the threats of the future are coming from ransomware that actually are fixed by Microsoft patches, not antivirus software. But I am on the lookout for a small footprint antivirus software.

I will try a few that are recommended by TechSupportAlert !

view
Safe Computing in Under an Hour 1 week 2 days ago MidnightCowboy Glad you liked the article. :) Your setup is somewhat different to what most would employ but it works for you and that is the key thing. With an add-blocker however, the majority of these are hidden so you are more likely to see just the 'clean' link. MC Site Manager. view

Nothing in life is guaranteed to remain the same. Software content is constantly changing, especially that which is known to contain potentially unwanted components and/or uses a wrapped installer. Rob's statement illustrates the state of the product at the time the article was written. It is always good practice however for users to check all software before installing it on their computer or mobile device. We have published several articles we hope will assist. MC - Site Manager.

You often conclude your recommendations with the sentences They're ....... rated reputable by Web of Trust. They're also malware-free according to VirusTotal.

Obviously, the statements were true at the moment when the tests were carried out, but do they remain necessarily true for all time. Do they have any real validity beyond being statements of historical facts?

Best Free Folder Synchronization Utility 1 week 2 days ago DavidFB

Agreed on FreeFileSync. I'm not going to use a data sync tool that is sharing activity with external servers.
Synchredible looks good but wouldn't backup to a NAS as it won't see it.

I also use a Backup on Save tool. Used FileHamster for years bit its not being updated and uses old .NET. Yardis sort of works but seems to get confused.

Oh curious. I Googled for the NAS issue and someone mentioning reinstalling Synchredible and then it worked. And indeed it did. I can now sync to my NAS.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Is there a a good guide/explanation at a beginner type level as how to effectively use this program.
It would be nice if further discussion was made as how to best use this program with examples perhaps.

The Faster Way To Copy Files 1 week 3 days ago mialee22

I have found the FASTEST method which I want to share with you all. After trying out many software and other tools I found that GS RIchcopy 360 works best among all. I can claim that this is the BEST software that I used till now. To copy files faster it uses multi threaded file transfer, claiming 100% multi threaded file transfer. Its really easy to use and provides lots of features. I have been using it for almost an year. Some of my favorite features include long path name support which is really important when copying large files, 100% multi threaded file transfer (as the company claims, you can witness the boost in transfer speed yourself), pre scheduled file transfer, email notification when the transfer is done, NTFS support, and many more exciting features. I am currently using the enterprise version of it. Try it, maybe it can solve you problems too!

I don't know, but if you have active security software running, perhaps you security software is blocking it. If you have automatic update enabled then you're already protected; if not then go to the updates page for Windows 10 and have the updates installed, but make sure your security software will let it pass through - it should automatically, but if not you will have to adjust your settings.

Thanks for the info. Looks like a useful program. But, do you know where I can find an explanation of the color highlighting used in the list of running services? I cannot find an explanation (except for light red) in the help file. Thanks.

Very useful tool. I've used it for many years. It can even submit all the start-up files to Virus Total and show you which ones are flagged by at least one scanner.

An antivirus is not going to stop it. Manufacturers putting out timely security updates will.

Thanks Rob, for the reminder about this program
Windows starts up with a large number of system processes, particularly if you have installed a lot of software
Its a little disturbing sometimes to use Task Manager, and see just how many services are running when you have just started your computer !

I dont use Google products, or Google Chrome (due to it being a memory hog in my system), but Google services seem to be running when I start my computer !
I have no idea why, I never said I wanted them on startup
I dont like the idea of Google services choosing to run when they choose to run

Unlike Task Manager or Process Hacker, Autoruns shows which services are running, and more importantly, lets you stop them from running on startup

However only an expert user should play around with this, as I am sure that if you stop some services, Windows will not start at all
Be very careful if you dont know exactly what the program or service does, before you delete it !!

Microsoft released a patch for most Windows systems in March 2017, including Windows 7.0, to protect against WannaCrypt

It seems all Windows versions are vulnerable, if you dont have mandatory updates - and specifically March 2017 update
The only reason Windows 10 is a little safer, is that it has mandatory updating

Search "Wannacrypt"Microsoft" to find the official Microsoft advice

"Microsoft solution available to protect additional products" (Microsoft, 12 May 2017)
"Customers who are running supported versions of the operating system (Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, Windows 10, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016) will have received the security update MS17-010 in March.
If customers have automatic updates enabled or have installed the update, they are protected.
For other customers, we encourage them to install the update as soon as possible"

I have Windows 7, and with some difficulty, I found the Microsoft page with the March 2017 patch for Windows 7, for those who dont like mandatory updates

there are better options with no irregular behavior in play store. personally, i always stay away from apps by dev's like CM and GO.

CM Security also offer CM Security Lite - Antivirus which uses less power, less memory and has fewer ads.
It seems to work quite satisfactorily.

Adobe Reader is bloated and slow. Some of these free readers have features that are not included in Adobe Reader.

I use full Adobe Acrobat and other Adobe products for production but for quick reading and editing, I prefer PDF-Xchange.
